Questran

Questran is used as a means to lower a person’s cholesterol level because of a genetic condition that causes too much low density lipoprotein (LDL). Another brand name for Questran is Questran Light. The generic brand name for Questran is Cholestryramine. Questran can be prescribed to lower cholesterol levels for people who have additional fat stored in their body. For patients who suffer from gallbladder obstruction, Questran is used to relieve chronic itching problems.

Questran may be prescribed when diet, exercise and weight loss don’t help to lower your cholesterol. Questran is not a substitute for a healthy diet and exercise program. Your doctor will refer you to a nutritionist if you need help coming up with a healthy diet and exercise program.

Always mix Questran with water or another form of liquid. If Questran is prescribed for you then use two to six ounces of liquid per packet. Should your doctor prescribe Questran Light, use two to three ounces in the liquid of your choice. Never take Questran when it is dry. If you forget to take a dose, be sure to take it as soon as you remember. If you remember to take it when it is close to being the time you normally take it then skip the dose you missed and get back on schedule.

Inform your doctor if you experience any side effects. The most common side effect is constipation. You may experience other side effects, including diarrhea, shortness of breath, increased sexual drive, fatigue, anxiety, abdominal pains, problems urinating, ringing in your ears, vomiting, heartburn, difficulties with swallowing, or swollen glands. Should you experience any other problems other than those listed let your doctor know. In any case, you should always let your doctor know of any side effects you may be having.

If you have an allergic reaction while taking Questran, inform your doctor immediately. There have been no known problems for women who are pregnant that take Questran, but it is still best to let your doctor know if you are pregnant or plan to conceive while taking Questran.

Be sure to store Questran at room temperature in a room that is not vulnerable to high humidity or moisture.

Questran has not been ruled out for use by children, but should be used only as deemed necessary by your doctor.
